Sandwich toaster

Sandwich toaster

A sandwich toaster (also known as a sandwich maker or sandwich maker ) is an electrical kitchen appliance for preparing baked sandwiches . The sandwich toaster works in a similar way to a waffle iron : it is essentially a hinged heating device in which the sandwiches to be prepared are placed. The device is then folded up and fries the sandwiches. The heating surfaces of many sandwich toasters are shaped so that they cut the sandwiches in half diagonally, creating the sandwich triangles that are common today. Often the heating surfaces are coated so that the sandwich does not stick, but it is recommended to rub the heating plates with a thin layer of oil. You should also avoid loosening a sandwich with a fork or the like (if it is baked on), as the coating could scratch.

The first sandwich toasters were manufactured by the Australian company Breville from 1974 . Nowadays, sandwich toasters are sold by many different suppliers.

The heating output is ≈ 1  kW (usually a little less).

The sandwich is usually filled with ham and cheese, the latter melting when heated in the sandwich toaster.
