The Sandy Cove Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was established as a provisional reserve in 2007. In 2013 the protected area received its current status. The reserve has a unique flora.

location

The reserve consists of two small parcels on the north coast of the Great Northern Peninsula , 4.5 km north of Flower's Cove parish . The total area is 15 hectares. Sandy Cove , a small bay south of Belle Isle Road, is located between the two parking areas .

flora

The harsh climate with strong winds and pronounced frost favors an arctic-alpine flora. The opposed saxifrage , the black crowberry , the stalkless cucumber , the white silverwort , fatty herbs and the rare and endangered plant Braya longii thrive on the limestone soils . This is a self-pollinating plant that relies on strong winds to spread.
