Sant'Agata alla Guilla

Sant'Agata alla Guilla is a church in Palermo .

The house of God was built in the 12th or 13th century on a place where, according to tradition, another house of the saints should previously have been. In the 16th century the church got its present appearance. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the former city gate of Sant'Agata alla Guilla .

The main facade is on via Celso. The portal is flanked by two columns with figural and floral reliefs of Mannerism in the lower area . The Corinthian capitals have a door lintel with floral ornaments, which is closed at the top by a triangular gable. The neoclassical gable and the two bell towers on the sides of the facade were added in the 17th century.

In the 19th century the three-aisled church was converted into a central building, the side chapels still have occasional stucco decorations from the 17th century. The "Conservatorio delle Maddalene pentite", founded in 1685, belonged to the church, an institution that should help prostitutes on the "right path".
