Sant'Anna la Misericordia

The Santa Maria della Misericordia , called Sant'Anna la Misericordia is a Baroque church in Palermo .

In the 16th century, a Franciscan convent was built east of Via Roma on the road to the port. The monastery church of Sant'Anna was built towards the end of the 16th century to a design by Mariano Smiriglio and consecrated in 1639. After the earthquake of 1726, parts of the church and the facade were renovated by Giovanni Biagio Amico .

Today the Museum of Modern Art ( Galleria d'Arte Moderna (Palermo) ) is housed in the monastery buildings with a completely preserved cloister in Gothic-Catalan style .

The elaborately designed facade follows the suggestions of the Roman baroque by Francesco Borromini . In the style of a display wall, it is divided into concave and convex curves, which are separated from each other by bright columns. Round niches with figures, statues at the corners, stone vases and volutes complete the building ornamentation . The interior of the three-aisled church cannot be entered until further notice due to acute dilapidation.
