Sant'Eufemia (Grado)
Sant'Eufemia is the main church of the northern Italian city of Grado and the former cathedral church of the Patriarch of Grado with the title of a minor basilica . The house of God is a rare, largely intact example of a church from the time of the Great Migration . In addition to church services, classical concerts are held in the church.
history
The single-nave aisle church from the second half of the 4th or the first half of the 5th century, originally built on this site, was expanded into a large three-aisled basilica by Archbishop Nicetas of Aquileia (454–485). When the Lombards invaded Friuli in 568 , Patriarch Paulus (557-569), who had since separated from the Church in Rome due to the three chapters dispute and assumed the title of Patriarch , fled from Aquileia to the Grado peninsula. Grado became the new seat of the patriarch. In the 6th century, Patriarch Elia (571-586) initiated the expansion of the church building, which essentially gave the church its present form. After the renovation work was completed, Elijah consecrated the church to Saint Euphemia of Chalcedon in 579 .
Since the restoration work in 1949, Sant'Eufemia has been freed from baroque elements and has largely returned to its original shape.
