The Romanesque church of Sant Martí del Clot

Sant Martí del Clot (also known as Sant Martí de Tornadissa ) is a heavily modified Romanesque church from the 12th century in the hamlet of the same name, belonging to the municipality of La Vall de Bianya , near the city of Olot in Catalonia . It is located at an altitude of 509 meters on a slope of the Sierra de Malforat. The hamlet had 37 inhabitants in 2009.

Building history

The church was first mentioned in 1253 as "Sancti Martini de Tenerife". This name was subsequently changed to “Sant Martí de Tornadissa” via “Terneriza” and “Tornariça”. The place itself has been documented since 1076. The church building was destroyed in the earthquake of 1428 in the area of Olot , rebuilt and redesigned as it is engraved in the keystone of the entrance portal in Gothic letters:

“This church was destroyed by the 1428 earthquake. The honorary people of the parish had the church restored in 1438. The construction work was directed by Francesc M. Coromina from Clot, who has already passed away; they were carried out by Pere de Massegur from La Pinya. 1439 "

In the 18th century, side chapels were added to the single-nave church on the north and south sides, which heighten the core building and now give the church a cross-shaped floor plan. The Romanesque walls on the south and north sides have a frieze attached to simple brackets. The semicircular apse is half covered by the sacristy attached to the south. The cornice of the apse has been preserved. In the center the apse has a blind window. The slender bell tower with a four-sided roof rises in the southwest corner of the building. After the Spanish Civil War , the interior walls of the church were plastered to cover up the scorch marks left by the iconoclastic arson attack in July 1936. Saint Martin was the patron saint of the soaring animals. That's why the owners of such animals put hooves on the entrance portal as gifts.
