Sant Quintí d'en Bas is a small, originally Romanesque hermit chapel on the left side of the Fluvià, a little north of the Els Hostalets district of the municipality of La Vall d'en Bas in the Catalan province of Girona in Spain . The chapel is in the middle of meadows and fields. In the background you can see the rock walls of the Puigsacalm.

Building history

The Romanesque hermit chapel of Sant Quintí d'en Bas

It is a small Romanesque original building from the 13th century, which was expanded at the beginning of the 18th century on the west side by an equally long but significantly more voluminous structure. The old Romanesque component was used as a sacristy after the extension. In the course of a comprehensive restoration in the summer of 1980, the entire building was used again for worship without the function of a sacristy. The east facade is rectangular with a central window. The bell wall rises above the west facade, where the slightly oval-shaped entrance door is also located. There is a window to the right and left of the entrance door. The purpose of these windows is to be able to see the altar from outside when the church is closed. There is also a small window above the door. There is also a window on the south side of the building in the old, original Romanesque part. The medium-sized ashlar stones originally used in the Romanesque building can be clearly seen here.

The history

The church, the predecessor of today's Romanesque structure, was first mentioned in 998 in a bull signed by Pope Gregory V as "Sancti Quintini". In this bull it is stated that the church is assigned to the monastery of Santa Maria of Besalú. In the year 1000, Count Bernat Tallaferro von Besalú gave this small church to a coenobite community . Later this small church was used as an independent parish church until 1776. In the year mentioned, Bishop Thomàs de Lorenzana i Butron of Girona subordinated the church to the parish of Sant Esteve d'en Bas.
