The Santa Barbara Oil Spill occurred in the Santa Barbara Canal in 1969 . The well was an uncontrolled spill of oil from a well on Unocal's platform A on January 28, 1969 , which was 10 km offshore in the Dos Cuadras Offshore Oil Field. Ten days flowed an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil (from 11,200 to 14,000 t) in the channel and on the beaches of Santa Barbara counties in Southern California and polluted the coast of Goleta to Rincon and all four of the northern Channel Islands .

One response was the National Marine Sanctuary program .
