As Santa Caterina or Chiesa di Santa Caterina , a church in the Venetian sestiere Cannaregio is called, which rises on the Fondamenta Ormesini; it should not be confused with the church of the same name on Mazzorbo , which was consecrated in 1291. The building in Cannaregio, which was built by the Augustinians in its current state and dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria goes back to the sack brothers who began building the church in the 13th century. Today the building is no longer used as a church, but for exhibitions and events.

history

The construction was started on the marshy ground at the time by the sack brothers, who called themselves Ordine della Penitenza di Gesù Cristo in Italy , at the beginning of the 13th century. This order was the first mendicant order to be accepted in Venice. Before the church was completed, however, the order was repealed in 1274.

The unfinished building subsequently had various owners, including a wealthy trader who gave it to Botolotta Giustinian, who in turn handed it over to a group of Augustinian nuns. From 1307, the doge appeared in the church for the annual Festa dei Dotti on November 25th.

The monastery practically only accepted nobles and was preferred by the Contarini. In Santa Caterina in 1616 only one of the 100 nuns came from a noble family. 14 members of the Contarini alone populated the monastery.

After the building had remained unused for decades, it was consecrated again in 1961, but in 1979 a fire destroyed the church, including numerous works of art. The most important work, the Sposalizio di S. Caterina , which is kept in the Gallerie dell'Accademia , was saved . Three further works, namely the Tintoretto cycle Vita di Santa Caterina from around 1585, then the altarpiece by Paolo Veronese Nozze di santa Caterina , and finally La madre di santa Caterina consulta i saggi per le nozze della figlia by Jacopo Palma d. J. , have also been preserved. However, you are also no longer in Santa Caterina, but in the Patriarch's Palace .
