The Chiesa di Santa Chiara is a church building in Palermo

At the Piazza Santa Chiara, on old Punic walls , Matteo Sclafani founded a Poor Clare monastery with an associated church in the Gothic style in 1340 , after receiving the palace of his uncle Matteo Termini at this point. In the 17th century the church was redesigned in baroque style and partly renewed. The monastery was closed in the 19th century.

The elaborately baroque style campanile placed to the left of the main facade is striking, in stark contrast to the simple facade with its straight roof. The only ornament on the facade is the blasted segmented gable above the portal with a coat of arms in between and the high ox eye .

The interior of the church is decorated with late baroque marble, stucco and frescoes. The barrel vault of the nave has monochrome paintings placed in symmetrical stucco fans with gilded rosettes. The central ceiling painting shows Saint Clare surrounded by putti.

The ceilings of the choir and apse are painted with Old Testament patriarchs and saints by an unknown 17th century painter from the school of Pietro Novelli . Pietro Novelli also painted his impressive altarpiece “Lamentation of Christ” for the church in 1646, which is now around the Museo Diocesano di Palermo .
