The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the oldest churches in Assisi . Together with the Bishop's Palace, it dominates the Piazza del Vescovado .

The building

Santa Maria Maggiore was built on the remains of a Roman temple, which can still be seen in the crypt (from the previous church). The facade is kept very simple, adorned by two vertical pilaster strips and a central rose window .

Religious meaning

The church was Assisi Cathedral until 1039 . In the adjacent bishop's palace, Francesco renounced all earthly possessions.
