Santa Maria degli Angeli

Santa Maria degli Angeli is a chapel designed by Mario Botta from 1990 to 1992 . It was built between 1992 and 1996 from concrete and porphyry and stands 1530 meters above sea level on the Alpe Foppa on the northeast slope of Monte Tamaro , in the municipality of Rivera , in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

The actual chapel is at the end of the whole construction. It is cylindrical in shape and has a base with a diameter of 15.30 meters and a height of 11 meters. A 65 meter long accessible viaduct leads to the chapel and leads from the mountain towards the valley. Visitors can choose between a staircase inside the viaduct that leads to the square in front of the entrance to the chapel or a path on the viaduct, which at its end forms the roof of the chapel. The path ends in a metal structure that serves as a lookout point and to hang the bell. The roof consists of stairs that lead to the left and right of the square to the entrance. The architecture is reminiscent of an amphitheater . The building has a volume of 2820 cubic meters.

The interior of the chapel consists of a two-sided nave and a central aisle that ends in a small apse . It was painted by Enzo Cucchi . There are wooden benches to the left and right. A total of 22 works by the painter are set into the walls on both sides above the windows. The small rectangular windows, attached at floor level, let in subtle light and illuminate the paintings and the prayers of praise and supplication above them.
