Santa Maria della Pace

Santa Maria della Pace is a baroque monastery church in Palermo .

Building history

At what is now Piazza Cappuccini, at that time outside the city, the small church of Santa Maria della Pace was built in Norman times to commemorate the peace between the two brothers Roger Borsa and Bohemond of Taranto . Shortly after Pope Clement VII recognized the branch of the Order of the Capuchins (1528) , Capuchins settled here in 1533 and built the first monastery buildings. It is the first monastery of the Franciscan Reform Order on Sicilian soil.

In 1565 it was decided to build a new monastery and church, which was not completed until 1623. From 1599 an extensive underground burial place, the famous Capuchin Crypt, was added to the monastery . The church owes its current appearance to a rigorous renovation in 1934. The interior of the three-aisled church is rather plain. The picture decorations date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The altar was carved by a friar in 1854. The two crucifixes in the side aisles date from the 18th century.
