Facade in Piazza Colonna

The small church of Santi Bartolomeo ed Alessandro dei Bergamaschi is located in the center of Rome on the Piazza Colonna , next to the Palazzo Ferrajoli . It is consecrated to Saints Bartholomew and Alexander of Bergamo and the national church of the Bergamasque in Rome.

It was originally called Santa Maria della Pietà , which referred to the relief above the portal. The church was built in 1591 by Padre Ferrante Ruiz for the Ospedale dei Pazzarelli , the first house for the mentally ill in Rome. This was transferred to the Via della Langara 1720 and the Church of the Confraternity of Bergamasques (Arciconfraternita dei Bergamaschi) passed, which had rebuilt 1728-35 to designs by Carlo De Dominicis (1696-1758) and build a new facade of the building. The tomb of Cardinal Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti is in the church .

Today the Church is still supported by the Arch Brotherhood, which has lived in Rome as the Bergamaschi community since 1539 and maintains a dialogue between the values, culture and traditions of Bergamo and those of Rome.
