Santiago (Alcácer do Sal)

Santiago is a former municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal . It belonged to the Alcácer do Sal district . The freguesia had an area of ​​286.9 km² and 4593 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This has resulted in a population density of 16 inh. / Km². The community included the historic downtown area of ​​Alcácer do Sal together with the former and meanwhile combined community of Santa Maria do Castelo, which also belongs to the same district . In addition to a monastery, the main church Igreja de Santiago was also located in this parish.

On September 29, 2013, the freguesias Alcácer do Sal (Santiago), Santa Susana and Alcácer do Sal (Santa Maria do Castelo) were merged to form the new Freguesia União das Freguesias de Alcácer do Sal (Santa Maria do Castelo e Santiago) e Santa Susana . Alcácer do Sal (Santiago) is the seat of this newly formed freguesia. The Freguesia Alcácer do Sal (Santiago) did not have a coat of arms.
