Sarah Haider is a Pakistani - American political activist and speaker. She is the founder of the Ex-Muslims of North America Interest Group (EXMNA), which helps former Muslims to leave their religious community and works to normalize religious disputes within Muslim faith communities.

Life

Haider was born in Karachi , Pakistan into a Shiite family. When she was seven years old, she moved to the United States with her family. She was a devout Muslim until she was 16, as she herself stated in an interview:

“I dressed modestly to divert attention from my body, and to the confusion of my parents, I decided to put on the hijab for a short time. I stayed away from drugs and sexual contact of any kind, followed the dietary rules and prayed as regularly as I could. "

At the age of 16 she became an atheist . According to her own statement, she was lucky to have a liberal father who, although he didn't let her wear shorts or have steadfast friends, allowed her to read all the books she wanted, including those that were critical of Islam, and finally allowed her allowed to move out of home to go to college .

activism

In 2013 Haider founded the Ex-Muslims of North America (EXMNA) together with Muhammad Syed . As a non-profit organization and online community, EXMNA helps Muslims to leave their religious community, supports them in life without a religious community and advocates the destigmatization of ex-Muslims.

The organization, which initially only worked from Washington, DC and Toronto , is now active in 25 locations in the USA and Canada .

According EXMNA often shun members of Muslim faith communities other Muslims who are accused of apostasy to be, as well as their families. For fear of exclusion from the community or violence, many Muslims do not want to be stigmatized as " unbelievers ". Therefore EXMNA tries to normalize the intra-religious dispute. In addition, EXMNA has created a social support network for those who have decided to leave Islam.

In 2015, Haider gave a speech entitled "Islam and the Necessity of Liberal Critique" at the 74th Annual Conference of the American Humanist Association in Denver, Colorado .

In 2017, Haider decided to tour the United States and Canada with EXMNA to speak at universities on issues affecting Muslims and non-Muslims during the 2017-2018 academic year.
