Salaryman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salaryman ( Japanese サ ラ リ ー マ ン , sararīman ) is a Japanese term for male office workers in well-known companies. It is a pseudo -Anglicism (see Wasei-Eigo ), composed of the words "salary" for "salary" and "man" for "man".

It used to be the goal of high school and college students to become a salaryman in a reputable company. This changed with the gradual dissolution of lifelong employment. The most important trademarks of a salaryman are a dark suit and tie and a briefcase.

The female counterpart to the salaryman is the Office Lady , a female employee who usually has less authority than her male colleagues. However, this is changing increasingly: women who work in the same profession as a salaryman are referred to as career women ( キ ャ リ ア ウ ー マ ン , kyariaūman ).
