Pallbearers at a military funeral
Pallbearers in Kenya .

A pallbearer is one of those people whose job it is to bring the coffin from the funeral service or the cemetery entrance to the excavated grave at a funeral . Often the pallbearers come from the private sphere of the deceased, but can also be provided by the undertaker, the cemetery administration or the city administration. The pallbearers provided by the cemetery and city administration are usually volunteers .

Since the occasion is a funeral, pallbearers should appear serious and well-groomed. Pallbearers should be able to communicate with each other in just a few words, as it is considered impolite to talk a lot at a funeral. Due to the weight of a coffin, pallbearers should be strong. There are usually six pallbearers.
