Life

Willem Roelof Oege was a son of the officer Bernardus Marius Goslings (* September 12, 1865 in Dokkum; † January 27, 1945 in Leiden) and his wife Elisabeth Rosalie Frederika Wessels (* October 23, 1878 in Batavia; † September 17, 1938 in Amsterdam). He was thus the brother of Johan Goslings . He completed his studies at the University of Amsterdam , where he passed his medical exam on July 1, 1931. Then he was until December 31, 1933 assistant in the Department of Tropical Pathology and Bacteriology of the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Amsterdam . During this time he received his doctorate on November 7, 1933 under Emilius Paulus Snijders (* October 24, 1884 in Amsterdam; † March 25, 1958 ibid.) With the thesis Onderzoekingen over de bacteriologie en de epidemiologie van het Scleroma Respiratorium (German: investigations for Bacteriology and Epidemiology of the Scleroma Respiratorium ).

On January 1, 1934, he moved to the Geertruiden Hospital in Deventer as a medical assistant and went to Sumatra Utara on May 1, 1935 , where he worked as chief physician at the Catharina Hospital in Kisaran . Here he was imprisoned by the Japanese during the Second World War and returned to the Netherlands in 1946. In the Netherlands he received in December 1947 a main assistant position to the professor of internal medicine Jacob Mulder (born May 5, 1901 in Steenderen, † October 1, 1965 in Leiden) at the Academic Hospital in Leiden , where he worked as an internist from 1948. From April 1949 he worked again as chief physician in Kisaran and in 1951 as a main employee at Mulder in Leiden. On October 18, 1956, Goslings was appointed lecturer for infectious diseases and antimicrobial therapy, which task he took on on January 1, 1957 and on May 21, 1957 his introductory speech Enkele Beschouwingen over verleden, heden en toekomst der infectieziekte (German: Some views on the Past, present and future of infectious diseases ).

On March 21, 1961 he received an appointment as associate professor for microbial diseases and antibiotics, which position he took on January 26, 1962 with the speech De kleine plagen van alle dag (German: The small pests of everyday life ). On August 21, 1965 he became a full professor of internal medicine, being the first Dutch professor to devote himself primarily to infectious diseases. In the academy year 1971/72 he was elected rector of the alma mater , for which he delivered the rector's speech Antibiotica en chemotherapeutica (German: Antibiotika und Chemotheraphie ) on March 8, 1972, on the 397th anniversary of the university . On December 17, 1973, he retired from his professorship and held his farewell lecture on March 29, 1974 on the subject of Quo Vadis? . He then moved to Dalfsen with his wife, where he spent the last years of his life. In 1974 he became Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , on June 25, 1976 he was awarded an honorary medical doctorate from the University of Edinburgh and in 1983 the Dutch Association for Infectious Diseases and Gist Brocades initiated a prize that bears his name.
