Sarcophagi (Trittenheim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sarcophagi near Trittenheim are part of a burial site from the time of the reign of the Roman emperors Valentinian and Gratian (around 375 AD) that was discovered on April 3, 1920 in the slopes of the vineyards of the "Trittenheimer Apotheke" vineyard . They are made of light-colored sandstone and, as was customary for regions with a Romanesque population in late antiquity , they are rectangular and have a roof-shaped cover.
