The Sarrass ( Polish za-rass 'to the blow' ) is a heavy saber that was used by the hussars .

description

The Sarrass has a heavy one or two-edged, curved blade. The blade usually has a hollow grind and is very heavy for a saber. In some versions it is used as a two-handed saber. Some blades are equipped with a Jelman and have a back blade that runs from the location towards the handle . The Sarrass is the classic cavalry saber of the hussars and, with the advent of Croatian and Hungarian cavalry, spread in the armies of Western Europe since the 17th century.

The type of weapon is probably of oriental origin. Oriental sabers (also known as scimitare ), which were available in one-handed and two-handed versions, were adapted and further developed at an early stage by the equestrian associations of Bosnians, Hungarians and other Balkan and steppe peoples, some of which were in Turkish service.
