Lake Sartai is located in northeastern Lithuania within the Rokiškis and Zarasai district communities . With a maximum length of 14.8 km and a width of 8.7 km, it has the longest shoreline of a Lithuanian lake at around 79 km. The most important inflow and only outflow is the Šventoji (literally: the saint), which flows into the Sartai in the extreme south at Dusetos and leaves it again in a southwest branch.

Sartai race

The glacial lake is located at an altitude of 99 m above sea level in a regional park named after it and has long been known for the horse races held on the frozen water surface during the cold season, the history of which goes back to the 19th century and which has been held regularly since 1905 were.

For safety reasons, these races have been held since 1933 on an elliptical, hippodrome-like racecourse on the lakeshore opposite Dusetos. The trotter race , organized annually at the end of January / beginning of February, has been the highlight of a winter folk festival for decades with over 50,000 visitors on the southern bank of the Sartai.
