The Satake-ji ( Japanese 佐 竹 寺 ) with the mountain name Myōfuku-san ( 妙 福山 ) and the sub-temple name Myōon-in ( 明 音 院 ) is a temple of the Buzan branch ( 豊 山 派 Buzan-ha ) of the Shingon direction of Buddhism in Hitachi-Ōta ( Ibaraki ), Japan. In the traditional count, it is the 22nd of the 33 temples in the Kantō region .

history

According to tradition, the temple was founded in the 1st year of Kanna ( 寛 和 元年 Kanna gennen ), 985, at the request of Emperor Kazan by priest Gemmitsu ( 元 密 ). Originally, the temple was known as the " Kannon Temple " ( 観 音 寺 Kannon-ji ) further north from the Tsurugaike pond ( 鶴 ヶ 池 ) on the Dōsaki hill ( 洞 崎 峰 ). The 6th head of the Satake clan , Satake Nagayoshi ( 佐 竹 長 義 ), supported the temple from 1269, which was then called "Satake-ji".

In 1553 the temple burned down completely, after which the 18th chief, Satake Yoshiaki ( 佐 竹 義 昭 ), had it moved to its current location. An eleven-faced Kannon, also known as “Kannon facing north” ( 北 向 観 音 Kitamuki Kannon ), is venerated .
