A type board is a smooth, strong board with side bars at a height above the height of the font, so several typesetting boards can be placed on top of each other without damaging the font. The size is about 66 × 60 × 5 cm.
Before printing, the typesetting board is used to store the typesetting on the typesetting ship (called ship for short in print shops ) after completion by the typesetter .
After the print run has been completed, the set board is pushed into a standing set shelf , provided the set is not to be put down again , melted down or otherwise stored.
