A setting ship is a tray used in manual setting to store lines from the angle hook for the assembly and transport of columns . Depending on their size , a distinction is made between column, octave, quart, folio and large vessels .

The setting ship consists of a rectangular metal plate with a metal or wood edge on three sides. Via the open side, the set can be pushed down from the set ship onto the work surface, the pressure press or into the standing set shelf.

With the Wima setting ship , a variant was developed in which movable and lockable stop bars were used. So the set could be fixed without untying. In addition, it was possible to quickly make a proof of the set on the jib - in the case of pressure presses with a height-adjustable roller.

After the columns or entire pages have been printed, the placement ship becomes a discard ship (formerly also known as an advantage ship). The offshoot (job title) cleans the page and puts everything back in its place, the letters and the excluded material in the type case, the dummy material such as bars, reglettes , squares and lines carefully for reuse in the container provided. Monotype set, on the other hand, was tipped into a container to be melted down after removing the reglets and lines.

The setting boat or the angle hook were also used for the practice of demonstrating lead lice to young professionals .
