Block closers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A set of normally is in lead type , the device for unbinding of the sentence. This is to secure it against falling over.

The classic method is to bind the sentence with column cord with the help of the typesetter . The cord, which is made of hemp, is wrapped around the finished set several times. The end is not knotted, but threaded in a loop with the help of the setting awl under the windings and tightened.

As a replacement for the column cord, block closers were developed, whereby there are different systems. With the "Quick-S" there are extendable rails that are tensioned by springs and can be plugged together at the corners. The normally open contact "druck mit" uses a rigid rail before the first and after the last line. A suitable rubber band is hung in a groove at the end of the rails, which fixes the set. Another method works with a wide band that has a clasp that holds the wrapped sentence together. However, this method was only used in the last few years of lead typesetting.
