Saul A. Fox National Coin Center

The Saul A. Fox National Coin Center is an Israeli research center for numismatics with an attached museum , which has been located in the Schottenstein National Campus for the Archeology of Israel (Hebrew: הקריה הלאומית לארכיאולוגיה של ארץ ישראל) in Jerusalemities and operated by the Israel Authority is managed.

collection

The collection consists of more than 120,000 coins from a period of around 2,300 years. The collection ranges from the invention of coinage in the 7th century BC to the 17th century. The majority of the coins are individual finds from large and small archaeological excavations . In addition, the collection includes more than 150 gold, silver and bronze coins, starting in the Persian period through to the Ottoman period. The extraordinary importance of the collection lies in the fact that the provenance of almost all coins has been established. As a result, it is one of the largest scientific numismatic databases of its kind in the world.

The core of the collection is supplemented by around 10,000 coins that numismatists collected from purchases made between 1925 and 1948.

activities

The Coin Center staff perform a wide range of tasks that include both academic and curatorial aspects. Members specialize in the identification, registration and scientific publication of coins found during excavations. Further tasks include scientific lectures and advice for researchers and archaeologists at home and abroad as well as the preparation of teaching materials.

public relation

The Saul Fox Center on the National Campus offers the public a special opportunity not only to visit the museum, but also to observe the work of the restorers in their laboratories to preserve and restore the coins.
