timeline

The Sautijn family originally came from Belgium. After the fall of Antwerp (1576), the cloth merchant Gillis Sautijn († 1607) emigrated to Amsterdam. His son Samuël Sautijn (1593–1672) was able to establish himself as a successful businessman there. His son Gillis Sautijn (1635–1689) gained entry into the city's government, which subsequently included various other family members.
