Scamillus (column)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In ancient architecture, the scamillus is a horizontal notch running around a column that separates the column shaft and the column neck ( hypotrachelion ) from each other. Up to three Scamilli can be arranged one below the other in a ring at the upper end of the column shaft.

The scamillus is not to be confused with the anuli that run between the neck of the column and the capital .
