Beautiful fountain (Nysa)
The beautiful fountain in Nysa (Eng. Neisse ) dates from the 17th century and is located on Ulica Wrocławska (Eng. Breslauer Straße ). It was a landmark of the residence city of the diocese of the Wroclaw bishops and has become it again under the name "Piekna Studnia" since its re-establishment in 1969 in Nysa, Poland. In 2000 it was crowned again, the golden Habsburg double-headed eagle , a replica of the original eagle that had been kept in the museum.
description
The lattice weighs 2600 kg, has its own height of about 4 meters and a diameter of 1.86 meters. Halfway up there is a ribbon with the inscription: “WILHELM HELLWEG MADE ME FROM THE POPULAR OF A COMMON MAGISTRATE WILHELM HELLWEG ZEUGWARTER Ao 1686”. The artist immortalized himself and pointed out that he was also a kit master (since 1681), namely “administrator of the imperial armory and armory in Neisse”.
history
The baroque fountain was donated in 1686 by the mayor of Neiss, Kasper Naas, who did not experience the inauguration on September 15, 1686 himself. The fountain, artfully made of five-meter-high iron grids, is an excellent example of European blacksmithing and resembles a large bird farmer, crowned by the golden heraldic bird. The wrought-iron fountain housing was made by the episcopal mint master and court locksmith Wilhelm Helleweg (* around 1650 in Stromberg / Westphalia , † 1695).
Up until 1878, when the municipal waterworks were built, the citizens of Neiss fetched water from the well, which according to an analysis by the pharmacist Theodor Poleck in 1863 was said to be very rich in minerals.
At the end of the Second World War and in the first few years after the war, this work of art experienced an adventurous fate: the fountain grille was probably removed in 1942 to save it from destruction. It survived the war and was stored in Fort Wodny (formerly known as the Blockhaus ). In 1946, thieves managed to steal it from there and make it to Niemodlin ( Falkenberg ). Police officers caught the thieves there and it was possible to bring the well back to Neisse and store it temporarily in the courtyard of the fire brigade . Despite an initiative by the citizens of Neiss to re-erect the fountain, it was not until 1969 that all restoration work was completed and the beautiful fountain could be re-erected.
