Schüschaiver ( Rhaeto-Romanic in the idiom Vallader , emphasis on the second syllable, not translatable, etymologically probably related to "tschaiver" = "Carnival, Carnival") is a custom in the Lower Engadine in the canton of Graubünden , which is limited to the village of Ftan .

procedure

Official part

The Schüschaiver festival takes place on the Saturday before the first Monday in February. The center of the festivities is the swearing-in (council: la saramantaziun ) of the political authorities, u. a. of the mayor (advises: il capo ).

Since 2004, the swearing-in, which takes place with a handshake and is also renewed within an electoral period through the public act, has only been carried out every two years. In the years without the oath of the authorities, a current topic is the focus of the day.

Village festival and customs

On Saturday morning, the unmarried young men of Ftan went into the forest to cut wood without any electrical aids. They return to the village with a horse and a wooden cart. The proceeds from the wood offered for sale at the festival will be used to benefit the local youth club.

In the afternoon, the village youth meets in Ftan Pitschen in the Engadin costume. A lot will determine who is allowed to march to the schoolhouse as a couple behind the village music and perform as a dance couple in the evening. The village associations and the student body present performances during the swearing-in of the officials. After the official part, a music company plays the Schüschaiverball , which lasts until late at night.
