Susanne Schützel is a German judoka - disabled athlete .

Career

Susanne Schützel comes from Frankfurt an der Oder . Since she was severely visually impaired from birth, but still wanted to play competitive sports, she looked for a disability-friendly sport and a club where she could practice a sport that was suitable for her and her disability. She therefore became a member of JC 90 Frankfurt (Oder) , which mainly offered judo , also for the disabled. In this discipline there were not only many visually impaired athletes, but also the opportunity to take part in international competitions in this club.

Since her performance was excellent, she was soon appointed to the German national judo team and used in international competitions. She was so successful in these missions that she was three times world champion in her weight class (half-light weight up to 52 kg), most recently at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona .

The highlight of her sporting career was her participation in the 2004 Paralympic Summer Games in Athens : Here she achieved 1st place in her weight class up to 52 kilograms and thus won a gold medal.

For this success she was awarded the silver bay leaf in 2005.
