from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1942 chess tournament in Munich took place from September 14th to 26th. The reigning world chess champion Alexander Alekhine won ahead of Paul Keres and Jan Foltys . The organizer, the European Chess Federation initiated by the Greater German Chess Federation , called the tournament the "European Championship" . The tournament is therefore sometimes seen as the forerunner of today's European championships in chess , although Jewish players and players from countries that were at war with the German Empire were not able to participate.
