Jan Foltys

Jan Foltys (born October 13, 1908 in Svinov , † March 11, 1952 in Ostrava ) was a Czechoslovak chess player . In 1950 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master .

Jan Foltys was one of the best chess players in Czechoslovakia from the mid-1930s until his untimely death. At the state championships he was second in 1936, third in 1938, first in 1940, second in 1943 and third in 1946. He represented his country at the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich in 1936 and at the official Chess Olympiad in Stockholm in 1937 and in Buenos Aires in 1939 .

Jan Foltys qualified in Mariánské Lázně 1951 for the Interzonal Saltsjöbaden 1952 , but he died of leukemia before the tournament began.
