Saarbrücken Chess Association 1970
The Saarbrücken Chess Association was founded on July 17th, 1970. It emerged from the merger of the chess departments of ATSV Saarbrücken and SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken . The chess players who are still active in the club were among the founding members: Werner Bauer, Eduard Radtke and Robert Schumacher. The club is one of the strongest in Saarland and in southwest Germany. The fate of the association was directed from 1970 to 1997 by the chairman Jacob Staudt. In 2003 the association was awarded the Hermann Neuberger plaque for successful youth work.
The association currently (as of October 2012) has more than 80 members, of which around 15 are young people. His teams play in the Oberliga Südwest, Saarlandliga, Verbandsliga and Kreisliga as well as in various youth leagues. The most famous chess player of the club is the international master and multiple Saarland champion Herbert Bastian .
The play and training rooms are now in the ATSV Center, the headquarters of the ATSV Saarbrücken in Saarbrücken. Also worth mentioning are the numerous chess working groups at schools in Saarland, which are supervised by members of the association.
Successes of the association
The first team became team champions from the Saarland from 1971 to 1981, 1984 to 1986 and 1992 to 1994.
