A shaft cap is a peaked cap , similar to a kepi . It was worn by the NSDAP formations in the German Reich until 1945 .

The hat is usually made of sturdy felt and leather. It has a visor and a suggested earmuff with a button on the front and a chin strap that is usually worn over the visor. The NSDAP party eagle was attached to the button of the earmuff .

Since 1945, this form of hat (like high boots or breeches ) has been very unusual in Germany.
