Sound quantities

A sound energy quantity is an energy quantity that is used to describe a sound field , parts thereof or sound sources .

The following sound energy quantities are common:

Sound energy quantity Connection with sound energy logarithmic size
Sound energy Sound energy level
Sound energy density per length , area or volume (depending on the location): or or
Sound energy density level
Sound power radiated or absorbed by a sound source per time : Sound power level
Sound intensity per area per time (flow of sound energy in the sound field): Sound intensity level

(The formula symbol is reserved for the sound pressure level, therefore the sound power level - in contrast to the system - has the same formula symbol as the sound energy level.)

For the metrological determination of the sound energy quantities, it is often used that they are proportional to the square of the corresponding sound field quantities (e.g. sound pressure ) at the same location in the sound field.
