Deflection

The momentary distance  x of a point  P (on a curve or a straight line) from its rest position is referred to as deflection or elongation of an oscillation .

The greatest deflection is called the amplitude and is indicated by the mathematical symbol as the maximum value.

For example, the amplitude of the sound displacement  ξ  (Greek Xi ) of a harmonic oscillation is :
