Shaloput

The Shaloputs ( Russian Шалопуты ) were a Christian movement in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

They described themselves as spiritual Christians or brothers of the spiritual life . The term shaloput goes back to schalnyj putj ( шальный путь , "crazy way"), a dysphemistic foreign name.

history

The community was first mentioned around 1875. It initially existed in the Tambov governorate . The leader was the farmer Porphyrios Kasatonow, who described himself as a living god . After his death in 1886, RI Likhachev became the new leader; he also called himself a living god .

The community expanded particularly in the southern and eastern Russian Empire. Influences of Tolstoyanism and other directions became visible later.

There has been little news about the community since the 1920s.

The brothers of the spiritual life assumed that the divine can indulge in all living beings. In some people it is alive in a special way.

They rejected orthodox dogmatic notions of the trinity of God in three persons (hypostases), as well as notions of the Last Judgment, heaven and hell, the physical resurrection and the second coming of Christ.

The first person in whom the divine dwelt was Moses, another Jesus of Nazareth. This was a human and attained divinity after fasting for 40 days in the desert. After his death his divinity passed on to his disciples and from these to their successors.

practice

The brothers of the spiritual life strove for ascetic forms of life. They renounced carnal food and alcohol consumption, they abstained from sex and refused to marry. They paid attention to the words, which should not be shameful .

Baptism was also nothing to them, as it only purifies the body, but not the soul. What was important to them was a life of love and spiritual solidarity among believers.

The spiritual leader and some elders had great authority . The movement strove for a communal life with shared ownership of residential buildings and means of production. Physical work in the fields and elsewhere was sacred to them.
