Schaufuß (patrician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schaufuss is the name of a patrician family from Alsfeld / Hessen.

origin

The origin of the family is not so easy to determine. It is assumed that it was formed from the combination schouwen (see, look at, look at) and vuoz = foot. The family has left significant traces in Alsfeld. As knightly aldermen / mayor families, they lived in Rittergasse. They were among the wealthiest families in the city and donated to numerous public institutions. The family can be found in Goethe's ancestral list. A street in Alsfeld is named after the Schaufuss family. It is located in the historic city center (Schaufussgasse).

coat of arms

The family's coat of arms shows a direct visual implementation of the family name: an angled, bare human leg on a red background with a golden frame. From 1469 the assignment to the lower nobility can be proven. The coat of arms is u. a. on the back of the town hall and at the passage to this "bell string". The coat of arms is depicted on the keystone in the ceiling of the choir of the Walpurgis Church.
