Count Ferdinand Peter Laurencin d'Armond (born October 15, 1819 in Kremsier , Moravia , † February 4, 1890 in Vienna ), pseudonym Philokales , was an Austrian music writer and music critic .

Life

Ferdinand Laurencin was a son of the chief steward of the Archbishop of Olomouc , Archduke Rudolph . He came to Brno in 1832 , where he attended high school and from 1836 the university and also took music lessons. He then studied philosophy in Prague, where he also received his doctorate. He completed his musical training from 1837 to 1839 with Wenzel Johann Tomaschek and from 1839 to 1841 with Karl Franz Pitsch . At this time he also met Louis Spohr , August Wilhelm Ambros and the Prague music journalist Anton Müller , who introduced him to writing reviews. Laurencin later went to Vienna, where he studied law and worked for the Allgemeine Wiener Musikzeitung until 1848 , for which he wrote reports on church music performances under the pseudonym "Philokales". From 1847 to 1852 he was active in the civil service, then a freelance writer.

In contrast to Eduard Hanslick and his formal aesthetics, he referred to the feeling or an "ideal content" as the content of the music, following Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and the idealistic aesthetics.

Eduard Hanslick writes about him in his memoirs: “Count Ferdinand Laurencin was an original of a completely different kind. In contrast to the sharp-witted, critical Nottebohm , he was the musical enthusiast of the purest water. I have never again met a person who could delight and delight music so completely, who wove, lived and - died so exclusively in music. "About Laurencin's last days, Hanslick says:" In 1891 [recte 1889] I still had the joy to celebrate Laurencin’s seventieth birthday with Brahms and Ehrbar as a close circle of friends . How refreshed us his childlike joy, his thankful mind! In a joking toast, referring to his affection for the New German School , I said that Laurencin may have glorified the excessive and the diminished triad, but one day his soul would surely rise to heaven in the form of a pure triad. Little did we know that this would happen so soon. Laurencin only survived his seventieth birthday by a few weeks. "
