Battle of Elleporus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The battle of Elleporus took place in 389 BC. Chr. Between Syracuse under the tyrant Dionysius I on one side and the Federation of Italietes on the other side instead.

Dionysius I was keen to gain a hegemonic position in Magna Graecia , the Greek world of Italy. This was opposed by the efforts of the other Greek colonies in southern Italy to seek independence. The cities of Thurii , Rhegium , Kaulonia , Metapont , Tarent and Elea then merged to form the Italiotischer Bund .

This did not prevent Dionysius I from landing in Calabria . At Elleporus , a river near Kaulonia , he then succeeded in decisively defeating the league of cities. The Greek cities then had to accept Syracuse's position of power in Magna Graecia.
