Kaulon

Kaulon or Kaulonia or Caulonia is an ancient city in Bruttium , today Calabria .

Kaulon is located on the eastern coast of Calabria in the territory of the municipality of Monasterace . The place was founded by colonists from Achaia , mother Greece before 700 BC. Founded. It is believed that the name was derived from a citizen named Kaulos. Just a few decades after it was founded, the city formed alliances with Kroton (also Bruttium) and Sybaris (later Thurioi in Lucania). These cities were also Achaean foundations. The large number of splendidly minted coins suggests a flourishing economy. Kaulon was born in 388 BC. Chr. Destroyed.

The archaeological site was badly damaged by winter storms in 2013/2014.

The small finds that came to light during the excavations are exhibited in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria .
