The Battle of Sarus was a battle between the Eastern Romans under Emperor Herakleios and the Persian General Shahrbaraz . After a series of maneuvers, Herakleios managed to catch up with the Shahbaraz's army, which was marching on the eastern Roman capital of Constantinople , in whose siege they took part with the Avars . The battle was a nominal victory for the Eastern Romans, but Shahrbaraz was able to withdraw his troops in order of battle and continue his march through Asia Minor .
