As industrial wood raw wood is known, which is not as solid wood or lumber processed further, but mechanically comminuted in further processing or chemically digested is. It is to be distinguished from industrial waste wood, the waste wood fraction of the wood processing industry. Industrial wood is mainly composed of thinner or inferior raw wood components of different types of wood.

Industrial wood , like industrial waste wood, is primarily used for the production of ground wood and cellulose as the basic materials for paper production , wood wool and for the production of wood-based materials such as chipboard and fiberboard . Depending on the type of use, industrial wood is divided into grinding wood or paper wood (S), cellulose wood (Z), panel wood (P) and wood wool (H), a further subdivision is made into hardwood and softwood (L and N) and wood 1. and 2nd class (1 and 2). The desired wood can be specified accordingly, for example ZN2 means cellulose wood / softwood 2nd class.
