The Schleinitz Mountains are a mountain range in the northern and central part of the island of New Ireland , Papua New Guinea . The highest elevation of the mountain is 1481 m. The Schleinitz Mountains are covered with dense tropical rainforest . The mountain range rises steeply on the southwest coast. The highest mountains are only about 4 km from the coastline. The landscape slopes gradually towards the northeast coast, where there are plains with mangrove swamps . Like other mountain ranges in Papua New Guinea, it is home to a wide variety of rare species of flora and fauna.

The Schleinitz Mountains were named after the German Vice Admiral and first governor of the New Guinea Company in the later German colony of German New Guinea , Georg von Schleinitz .
