Schlenggeltag

The Schlenggeltag ( Schlenkltag, Truhentag ) is February 3rd .

The Schlenggel-, Schlenkl- or Chest Day is a name that is still known mainly in Austria and until the 20th century also in Bavaria. The Schlenggeltag is the day of Candlemas Mary follows. On this day, a short period of time began for the servants until Saint Agatha ( February 5th ) offered the opportunity to change jobs and represented a kind of "annual vacation" for the servants and maidservants .

The servants used to change their jobs (also on Michaelmas Day, 29 September ) and took their little belongings in suitcases or chests to the new employer.
