Plain housing estate on Sacksdamm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The “ Schlichtbausiedlung Am Sacksdamm / Alte Landwehr” is a simple housing estate in Bremen- Sebaldsbrück . The complex originally consisted of 93 auxiliary apartments in 11 two-story and 71 single-story buildings. The settlement was built in 1926 by the housing department for financially weak families who had become homeless. It is the only surviving facility from this period in Bremen and is threatened with demolition.

history

The settlement Am Sacksdamm (formerly: Auf den Pferdeweiden) was built in August 1926 by the municipal housing department on the historical site of an old Im Sack farm. The Bremen state government had up to 2,900 apartments built annually between 1926 and 1931, many of them as so-called small or very small apartments. This was intended to supply the large number of people looking for accommodation without introducing means of expropriation or forced management. At that time, Bremen played a leading role in state and state-subsidized housing construction.

architecture

The Am Sacksdamm settlement consists of simple, rough plastered one and two-story houses with 86 residential units. The single-storey buildings with attached gables are based on the street layout along the property line. The two-storey buildings are oriented towards a laundry drying area with two wash houses.

The facility, architecture and equipment have been greatly reduced for cost reasons: crawl space instead of a basement, vestibule in the entrance area instead of hallway, flat roof covered with a double layer of cardboard, no individual laundry rooms. Every second entrance group was provided with a wooden pergola. The other entrances and gable areas were provided with tensioning wires for climbing plants, and the front gardens were uniformly enclosed with hedges. Due to neglect and vacancy, the entire facility is in a poor condition today. Subsequently added elements such as vestibules and hunter fences impair a uniform architectural image. The settlement is undoubtedly of social and historical importance.

use

Settlement Am Sacksdamm

The apartments were intended as auxiliary or makeshift apartments for limited use of around 25 years, which would end at the latest when the economic situation improved. "Due to extensive restrictions in the development costs and the greatest economy in construction (...) we have succeeded in creating hygienically perfect apartments that can be sold at a very moderate rental price." This was between 20 and 30 Reichsmarks per month for three different apartment types 39 and 44 square meters. Proposed tenants were economically weakest, mostly families with many children and who had become homeless.

Today the residents of many simple apartments are not tenants, but users according to the OPR (homeless police law). The address Am Sacksdamm is therefore also associated with stigmatization, which on the other hand led to a strong cohesion among the residents. The estate was managed by the Bremische Baugesellschaft until they sold it to a private investor Vonovia (formerly: Vitus Group). It is planned to demolish the settlement and make space for new buildings. In contrast, an alliance of residents and social associations has formed.
