The Finsterwalder Schloss is a Renaissance complex in the Brandenburg town of Finsterwalde .

The castle building is divided into two parts, the front and the rear castle, each with a lovely inner courtyard. As a four-wing structure with a uniform height and with its profiled sandstone walls on all facades, the rear lock has a relatively homogeneous, essentially Renaissance appearance. The front castle, on the other hand, consists of several buildings of different heights, which date back to different epochs from the Renaissance to the early 20th century. The transition from the front to the rear lock leads over a bridge and through the castle tower, which is crowned by a pyramid roof with a lantern . In the walls of the rear lock, some of the building fabric of the previous building, a medieval castle complex , is still preserved. Some interiors are decorated with a cross or star vault .

history

The first documented lord of the castle or castle appears in a document from 1282 as a "Dominus Heinemanus de Vynsterwalde". In the 14th and early 15th centuries, the castle is said to have been the seat of a robber baron named von Gorenzen, who attacked travelers on the trade routes in the area from here .

In the period from the first half of the 15th century to 1625, the rule was successively owned by the von Maltitz , von Minckwitz and von Dieskau families . The extensive renovations and extensions that took place during this time are still formative today for the shape of the rear lock in particular, but also for parts of the front lock. The completion of the building is attributed in particular to the noble family of Dieskau, who took possession of the castle in 1533, as it has largely been preserved to our day.

In the 19th century the front lock was the location of two cloth factories, while the back lock served as a residential building for the families of the manufacturers. Since 1885 the front castle has been the seat of the Finsterwalder city administration. In 1919 the town also bought the back lock. In 1925, in place of one of the cloth factories, a new fire station was built in the area of the front lock , which today serves as a fire station museum.

During the opening times of the city administration it is possible to visit the interior and the courtyard. The latter are also accessible during the daytime at the weekend and, like the castle park, invite you to take walks.
