history

13th to 18th centuries

The castle was built in the 13th century by Gyr von Stammheim (documented in 1252). Since 1253 the family consistently called themselves von Girsberg . After the family died out in the 14th century, the castle came under the control of the Habsburgs , who held high jurisdiction. David von Winkelsheim is said to have been born here. From the 16th to the 18th century, the castle was mostly owned by Schaffhausen patricians. In 1756 the castle was destroyed by fire, only the residential tower from the 13th century was spared from the flames. The owner at the time, Johann Georg Friedrich im Thurn , rebuilt the castle.

20th to 21st century

In 1919 the Bodmer family from Zurich bought the castle and renovated it in 1920/1921. The castle is still in their private ownership to this day.
